Another Technique

This tutorial demonstrates an application technique for medium to large vinyl wall quotes. Smaller vinyl words and wall quotes can be applied without taping the quote to the wall first. If you would like to see this application technique, which is the same technique used for applying our family stickers, and can be seen on our family sticker application tutorial here.

The quote used in this tutorial is Quote #2 from our Entryway Vinyl Wall Quotes Collection

This method also works for two color vinyl wall quotes.

Step 1 - Position on Wall and Remove Backing

1. Your new vinyl lettering/wall quote comes in three layers: A thick, cardstock-like backing paper with grids on the back, the vinyl lettering/sticker and an opaque transfer tape. Arrange the layout of your lettering as you would like it to appear on your wall – use lengths of masking tape along the top edge to temporarily adhere the quote pieces to the wall/surface, but do not remove the background paper just yet. Be sure to measure from the letters themselves and not the edge of the background paper.

2. Using the masking tape as a hinge, and doing one piece at a time, lift up the lettering and carefully peel off the background paper. (It might help to have an extra set of hands to keep the sticky surface of the lettering and transfer tape off the wall). The vinyl lettering/sticker will stick to the opaque transfer tape as you peel away the background paper. If the vinyl sticks to the backing paper, stop. Press all three layers back together at that spot and try again.

Step 2 - Apply Sticker to Wall and Remove Tape

3. Gently let the lettering and tape come back down against the wall, smoothing as you go - top to bottom and from the center outward. Again, a good idea here to have an extra set of hands to hold the tape away from the wall as you work. Smooth all over the quote with your hand, a credit card or a spatula – virtually any smooth edge will do.

4. Beginning in one corner, carefully peel away the transfer tape from the wall in a back and downward motion rather than pulling up away from the wall. The letters should be adhering to the wall, if they come up with the tape, stop. Lay that section down, rub hard with your fingers or other smooth edge and try again.

Step 3 - Enjoy Your New Wall Quote
